Takoma Theatre
Takoma Theatre was designed by renowned architect John Jacob Zink as a movie theater in 1923 and served as a centerpiece of the neighborhood for decades. In 1983, the property was converted to a live performance venue and is best known for Chris Rock’s famous 1996 HBO Comedy Special, “Bring the Pain,” which won two Emmys and a Grammy Award. The property is a DC treasure and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
After falling into disrepair and sitting vacant for years, Rock Creek took on the restoration of this beautiful neighborhood landmark. By adding a new second floor to the interior, exposing the structural steel trusses, and adding dozens of windows and skylights, Rock Creek created an innovative loft-style space ideal for both retail and office uses. A dedicated parking lot serves the property, and the Metro is just two blocks away. The property is leased to Children’s National Medical Center for use as a state-of-the-art pediatric facility for behavioral health and medicine, hearing, speech, and autism.
